Self-Care 101

———

I know. You must be wondering “What could possibly be the difference between loving myself and self-care?” The truth is — there’s really only one big difference. The factor that sets them apart is action. Loving yourself is a mindset, but self-care is all about the actions you take to benefit yourself.

I’m sure you already know the cliches: sleep better, eat well, exercise, be mindful, etc. Though these reminders seem tireless and never-ending, there’s some truth to them. Take it from me — a fellow teenager struggling with mental health. What reason do I have to lie? These are the basic foundational skills that can make a difference when applied.

But here’s the thing I want to emphasize most: prioritize your independence. It’s so tempting to give in to peer pressure or listen to the outside voices telling you what to do. But you have to ask yourself, “Does following this path outweigh the benefits of listening to myself?”

SAY NO! You are your own person. No one else controls you. You have the power to use your own voice, to be that voice of reason. It’s tough when everyone else is doing something different, especially if it feels like the “right choice” is unpopular. But you’re the one who decides what’s best for you—whether it’s standing up for yourself, making the right choice, or even walking away from a situation.

That leads me to another crucial point: choose your friends wisely. Surround yourself with people who lift you up, not ones who push you into dangerous or uncomfortable situations. A solid support system is vital to your well-being and can make all the difference during tough times.

Remember, self-care isn’t just about physical health—it’s also about emotional and mental health. It’s about making decisions that reflect your worth and prioritizing your well-being. You deserve that.
